Google Ads bring visitors only while you pay: in 2026 the average click costs $5.42 and the average lead $66.69, more in competitive local services. Organic traffic and AI search work the other way. They take longer — Google itself says SEO usually needs four months to a year — but the pages you build keep bringing customers after you stop. At $1,000 a month, that’s $12,000 a year; if one customer brings you $1,000 in profit, one extra customer a month pays for it, and the pages keep working in year two.

If you remember one thing from this guide: an ad buys a visit; a page earns visits. Paid search is a faucet — it runs while the meter runs. Organic search and AI answers are a well you dig once and keep drawing from. Most local businesses spend every month on the faucet and never dig the well.
Search ads are useful: they put you at the top today, and you pay per click. But the price of that click — and of each lead — keeps you on the meter. Here are LocaliQ’s 2026 averages for a few local industries:
| Industry | Avg. cost per click | Avg. cost per lead |
|---|---|---|
| All industries | $5.42 | $66.69 |
| Home & home improvement | $8.33 | $90.92 |
| Attorneys & legal services | $9.87 | $131.63 |
| Dentists & dental services | $8.00 | $72.97 |
| Beauty & personal care | $4.62 | $39.25 |
| Physicians & surgeons | $4.76 | $40.04 |

None of that is a reason to never run ads. It’s a reason to see them for what they are: rent. The day the budget stops, the visits stop. Nothing you paid for last year is still bringing customers this year.
Organic results can’t be bought, so they have to be earned. Google needs to find each new page, understand it, test it against other pages and decide to trust it. Google’s own advice to business owners hiring an SEO: in most cases it takes four months to a year to see benefits (Google’s Maile Ohye, via Search Engine Roundtable).
What you see along the way is a staircase, not a straight line. We publish two articles a week on every site we run in our own analytics platform — about seven projects, including sites only one and two months old — and the pattern is the same: impressions climb in steps as each batch of pages gets picked up, then clicks follow.
Say you invest $1,000 a month in organic search and AI search for a year: $12,000. Is that a lot? It depends on one number — the profit one new customer brings you.
| Profit from one customer | Customers to cover the year | That’s about |
|---|---|---|
| $500 | 24 | 2 new customers a month |
| $1,000 | 12 | 1 new customer a month |
| $2,000 | 6 | 1 new customer every two months |
| $5,000 | 3 | 3 customers a year |
For a business with an average ticket of $1,000–$2,000 — a dentist, a med spa, a contractor, a law firm — one or two extra customers a month is a modest goal for a site that ranks. And if your customers come back or refer others, one customer is worth far more than one ticket.
Now compare it honestly with ads. The same $12,000 in Google Ads at the all-industry average of $66.69 per lead buys about 180 leads — fast. Ads win month one. But in month 13, ads give you nothing unless you pay another $12,000. Organic gives you a library of about 100 pages that keeps working, and from then on you choose: keep growing it, or keep it healthy for less.
Ads win month one. Organic wins year two. The smart move for most local businesses isn’t either-or: use ads for what you need this month, and build organic for everything after.

A website built for ads is a landing page: it converts the traffic you pay for and does nothing else. A website built for organic search is different. Every week it gets new evergreen pages — answers to the questions your customers actually type, about your services, your area, your prices and your process.
It takes 6–12 months to get the factory running. After that it needs maintenance, like any machine — but it keeps producing. That’s the difference between paying for a website and investing in one.
Customers now also ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI where to go — 45% of US consumers used AI tools for local recommendations in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey (BrightLocal). Those assistants answer from pages they can read and trust. A library of clear, answer-first articles is exactly what they quote — and a place in an AI answer can’t be bought with a click budget.
Paid ads are taking more space in Google too: in one 2026 study of product searches, ads’ share of clicks roughly doubled year over year, while classic organic results still took 50–84% of clicks (Aleyda Solis via Search Engine Land). Organic is getting more competitive, not less important — another reason to start early.
This is the service we built for exactly this. Search Growth covers SEO, GEO and AEO — search engine optimization (Google and Bing), generative engine optimization (being cited in AI answers) and answer engine optimization (being the direct answer) — in one monthly plan:
| $1,000/month in Google Ads | $1,000/month in Search Growth | |
|---|---|---|
| First results | Right away | First signals in 2–3 months |
| After 6 months | The same as month one | 30–50 pages bringing in visitors |
| If you stop | Traffic drops to zero that day | The pages stay and keep working |
| AI assistants | Can’t buy a place in the answer | Give AI something to quote |
| What you own | Nothing | A library of articles and your site |

They do different jobs. Ads bring visitors immediately but only while you pay — in 2026 the average lead from search ads costs about $67. Organic traffic takes 6–12 months to build but keeps working after you stop, and the same pages help you appear in AI answers. Most local businesses do best with both.
Google has said SEO usually needs four months to a year to show benefits. In our experience, first signals — rising impressions — show in 2–3 months when you publish consistently, and solid results come in 6–12.
It depends on what one customer is worth. At $1,000 profit per customer, one extra customer a month covers it. At $2,000, one every two months does. Run your own numbers with a simple ROI calculator before you decide.
Paid traffic stops the same day. Organic pages you’ve published stay in search and keep bringing visitors, though they need occasional updates to stay competitive.
Consistency matters more than volume. We publish two a week — about eight a month — each answering a real customer question and linking to your services. That builds a library of 50 pages in six months.
Yes, when AI assistants can read them. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI answer from pages they can access and trust, so clear answer-first articles with accurate facts give them something to quote. No one can guarantee placement.
